Pope Saint John Paul II was born on May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, Poland. His real name is Karol Jozef Wojtyla. Karol was baptized into Christ and His Church on June 20, 1920 by a Chaplain in the Polish Army. Much of his advanced education was obtained underground after the Nazi invasion of Poland. In 1942 he entered the clandestine seminary in Krakow. Karol lost his mother a month before his ninth birthday. She died of heart and kidney problems. When he was only 12 years old his brother the Doctor died of scarlet fever.
Pope Saint John Paul II was ordained a priest in 1964 Much of his advanced education was obtained underground after the Nazi invasion of Poland and in 1942 he entered the clandestine seminary in Kralow. Later he was a priest in 1946, bishop in 1958, and was appointed archbishop of Krakow in 1964. He elevated to the College of Cardinals in 1967, and elected to the Chair of Peter as Pope John Paul II in 1978. His lifelong devotion to "the Most Holy Madonna" was expressed in his papal motto, Totus tuus ("Totally yours") dedicating himself, his papacy, and the world to Mary. A ground-breaker in many ways, he was the first Polish pope and the first non-Italian pontiff in four hundred years. He left the church more than a dozen encyclicals and scores of other documents. He beatified and canonized more than a thousand men and women from all walks of life. On May 11, 2011, he was beatified, which is third among the four steps leading towards canonization. He was beautified by Pope Benedict XVI on May 1, 2011. And canonized by Pope Francis on April 27, 2014.Pope Saint John Paul II was one of the most travelled world leaders in history, visiting 129 countries during his pontificate.
He died on April 2, 2005. He was assassinated, the assassin used a Browning 9 mm semi-automatic pistol, shooting the pope in the abdomen and perforating his colon and small intestine multiple times. John Paul II was rushed into the Vatican complex and then to the Gemelli Hospital. On the way to the hospital, he lost consciousness. Even though the two bullets missed his mesenteric artery and abdominal aorta, he lost nearly three-quarters of his blood. Pope Saint John Paul II had 5 hours of surgery to treat his wounds. When he briefly gained consciousness before being operated on, he instructed the doctors not to remove his Brown Scapular during the operation.
