For this weeks blog I will talk about the novel I read, "Out of My Mind" by Sharon M. Draper. It is about an eleven year old girl named Melody, who has Cerebral Palsy, which is a condition that starts in the center of the motor brain and then slowly enables you to speak and have control of yourself. Melody is gifted with an amazingly ability of photographic memory and intelligence. One day Melody's mom took her to the doctor, he mom was greatly insulted that the doctor had pointer out that she was retarded, her mom then got insulted and enrolled her to Spaulding Street Elementary. Mrs. Violet Valencia was then asked to babysit while the parents went out to work, but she had no pity for her. Mrs. V believed that Melody could do anything if she really put her own mind to it. Right then and there, Melody started to get ability to move little by little. When Melody was in fifth grade they moved her to a regular class with the normal kids, but since she was different many of the kids bullied her and called her names. She then discovered the Medi-Talker that gave her the ability to speak her mind, through a computer. When it was time for a new team for the Whiz-Kid, Melody decided to join. They tested everyone who wanted to join, Melody was one of them who passed the test and was able to join the team, plus also the first one to get all questions correct. They all believed that Melody was an intelligent and talented child. When it was time to head to Washington, the teacher and teammates flew out a day before without telling Melody, leaving them with the ninth place. When Melody got back from the airport, she was rethinking herself as a failure and becoming very insecure about herself. She later became persistent on going back to school. When her mom was backing up her car, she didn't realize that Melody's sister, Penny was playing outside and she ran over her. Penny luckily survived the hit and Melody went back to school the next day. When she went back she confronted her team why they would leave her behind they had said that they relied saying they were thinking she would slow them down. Melody then ended her story retelling it all over again. |

So this week I learned how to write an essay the right way. The way you start off your essay is with an introduction which starts off with a hook. The hook is to grab the readers attention, one thing about a hook is that if you don't have a good grabber, which is the hook no one is gonna wanna read your essay.Your hook can be anything that you think will grab the readers attention. It can be a question, quote, statement, etc. The next thing after your hook is your wanna make sure you have a good short summary of what your essay will be about. For example, today I did an essay based on a poem I did called "The Fort" by Marie Howe. I made sure I had a good hook, which is a question and summary of what the poem was about. Next, after your Introduction you will have a body paragraph. For your body paragraph you need to make sure you have a good topic sentence, when you write your topic sentence it is a main sentence telling what your paragraph will be about. In the body paragraph you can also use a transition word to go on to the next sentence you will talk about, which is evidence about your topic. When you write about your evidence you need to make sure you have an example to complete your evidence. If you don't have you example to support your evidence anyone reading your essay will think you are making it up. In your essay you can have at least 2-3 examples of your topic. Once your done with your evidence and explanations, you can move on to your next paragraph but in order to do that you need to make sure you have a transition to the next one. In an essay you need to have at least 2-3 body paragraphs. Once you are done writing your body paragraphs you move on to what is called your conclusion. The conclusion should be a transition word that restates your thesis that you said in the beginning of the sentence. After that you quickly summarize what your in all essay was about, you emphasize the important points. Finally, you finish up with your general statement...just like I did there.
Hyphens mainly are to glue words together. They will notify the reader that there are more an two or more elements linked to a sentence. If the hyphenated word comes before a noun it generally modifies and acts as a compound adjective. An example a compound adjective hyphen is an off-campus apartment and state-of-the-art design. A hyphen is frequently required when forming original compound verbs. For example, the slacker video-gamed his way through life. Hyphens may also be used to tell a persons age, example we have a two-year-old child. Parallelism is if similar idea are expressed using the same syntactic and grammatical structure. The most common way of using parallelism is gerund phrases which is a verb+ing or infinitives which is to+verb. An example is "Without good pitching, the Marlins can be expected to lose more than eighty games, to draft early in the next years draft, and attendance will suffer greatly." In the example "to lose" is to+verb which equals an indefinitive, "to draft" is to+verb and also equals an indefinitve but "and attendance will" is a future tense. One other way to identify a parallelism is also by using correlative conjunctions and comparisons it includes both, and; but, also; either, nor; whether, or; neither, nor. These words connect words, phrases, and clauses. This week I learned about commas. The things you need to know about commas are very easy especially if you use them a lot like other people. First things first you have to know all 8 rules about a comma. The first rule is that you must separate items in a list of 3 or more. An example would be the girl ate candy, ice cream, and drank chocolate milk before dinner. If you noticed I put a comma in between every item I listed. The second rule is to separate independent clauses which are joined by conjunctions: For And Nor But Or Yet So which a way to memorize that is FANBOY. Here's an example, I want to buy a new jacket, but it is too expensive. The comma was used before But to separate it. The third rule is to separate independent clauses, which is an incomplete thought. Example, when I get older, I will be able to drive. In my example you can see that I put "when I get older" that would be my incomplete thought. I will skip down to rule number 6. In rule number six you will use the comma to separate an introductory element from the rest of the sentence, for example Hey, how are you? I separated "Hey" from the rest of the sentence. Now rule number 7 will be used to separate the name of the city from a country or state. For example I live in Arleta, California. In the sentence I separated the city I live in from the country. Rule number 8. You will use to separate the day of the week, the day of the month, and the year. My example is Today is Thursday, March 26, 2015. I separated the day of the week from the month.
