Glossary of Poetic Terms
Define the following terms as they apply to poetry. Find examples in the text as your read "Love That Dog" - cite examples with quotes and page numbers.
Alliteration - the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or connected words.
Example: "... or their family gets sick, or their electricity goes off, or the car needs fixing, or they have to go, to the grocery store, or do the laundry, or clean up messes."(pg. 56)
Assonance - the repetition of a sound of a vowel in poetry.
Example:"Blue car, blue car, shining bright in the darkness of the night: who could see you speeding by like a comet in the sky?"(p.8)
Figurative Language - refers to words or a group of words that exaggerate.
Example: "I tried. Can't do it.Brain's empty." (pg. 2)
Hyperbole - exaggerated statements
Example: "And they will shout Car!"(p.32)
Irony - the expression of one's meaning in other words sarcasm
Example: "That was the best best BEST poem you read yesterday by Mr. Walter Dean Myers the best best BEST poem ever." (pg. 42)
Imagery - visually descriptive or figurative language
Example: "I liked those small poems we read today. (p.15)
Metaphor - a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to and object or action
Example: "My brain was pop-pop-popping when I was looking at those poems. I never knew a poet person could do that funny kind of thing." (pg. 35)
Meter - is a rhythm established by a poem
Example: "...who wrote that and why didn't he or she want to put..." (pg. 40)
Narrator - person who narrates something
Example: "I don't want to because boys don't write poetry." (pg.1)
Onomatopoeia - the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is name.
Example: "But it was too late because the blue car blue car splattered with mud hit Sky thud thud thud and kept on going in such a hurry. " (pg.70-71)
Personification- something nonhuman
Example:"I don't want to write about that blue car that had miles to go before it slept, so many miles to go in such a hurry." (pg. 7)
Point of View - a particular attitude or way of considering a matter
Example: "Okay I guess, I'll put my name on it." (pg.74)
Rhyme - correspondence of sound between words or endings of words especially used of ending lines of poetry
Example: "Blue car, blue car, shining bright in the darkness of the night who could see you speeding by like a comet in the sky?" (pg. 8)
Rhythm - a strong, regular, repeated pattern of movement and sound
Example: "Love that dog,like a bird loves to fly I said love that like a bird loves to fly
Love to call him in the morning love to call "Hey there, Sky!" (pg. 86)
Simile - a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another
Example: "... I could see you in the night, blue car, blue car, shining bright I could see you speeding by like a comet in the sky." Pg. 8
Stanza - a group of lines forming a basic recurring metrical unit in a poem
Example: "I don't want to because boys don't write poetry.
Girls do." Pg. 1
Style - a manner of doing something
Example: Page 37 of the poem shaped like a dog.
Syntax - the arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences
Example: "What do you mean"(pg.5)
Theme - the subject of a talk, a piece of writing, a person's thought, or an exhibition; a topic
Example: I don't want to because boys don't write poetry.
Girls do."(pg.1)
Tone - is the attitude that the style implies
Example: Wow!" Pg. 78
